It may also be associated with systemic inflammation and increased protein metabolism, which is collectively referred to as pulmonary cachexia syndrome. A consequence of this is reduced muscle strength. Studies show that between 27-37% of COPD patients have cachexia<sup data-fn=\"308c1410-4bdb-447a-9834-03a280a560af\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#308c1410-4bdb-447a-9834-03a280a560af\" id=\"308c1410-4bdb-447a-9834-03a280a560af-link\">1<\/a><\/sup>. Low weight and low fat-free mass are associated with a poor prognosis of COPD.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Obese or overweight COPD patients may also develop cachexia, leading to reduced muscle strength. Unplanned or sudden weight reductions are important signals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nutritional treatment for COPD<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is recommended that malnourished patients with COPD follow an energy-dense diet rich in protein and take high doses of the marine fatty acids EPA and DHA.
