With clinical data indicating that Smartfish formulations could positively influence important underlying mechanisms of cachexia such as insulin resistance, inflammation and anorexia, we decided to invest in developing a product specifically for cachexia, Remune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smartfish medical nutrition products improve the situation for patients with pre-cachexia or cachexia by increasing the uptake of nutrition, hampering the progression of pre-cachexia or cachexia, or alleviating symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remune is a high quality oral nutritional supplement, with carefully selected ingredients to target the underlying mechanisms of cachexia; anorexia, inflammation and insulin resistance<sup data-fn=\"f1412d03-ba71-41b1-abb5-560694ef3387\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#f1412d03-ba71-41b1-abb5-560694ef3387\" id=\"f1412d03-ba71-41b1-abb5-560694ef3387-link\">1<\/a><\/sup>. The key ingredients of Remune are the marine omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, vitamin D and whey protein rich in essential amino acids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA has anti-inflammatory properties<sup data-fn=\"fc8bfa7d-7ae8-4c2c-a964-97c363fc79f8\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#fc8bfa7d-7ae8-4c2c-a964-97c363fc79f8\" id=\"fc8bfa7d-7ae8-4c2c-a964-97c363fc79f8-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> and can positively affect the inflammation associated with cancer and cachexia. EPA and DHA influences muscle protein synthesis<sup data-fn=\"7333361f-9cbc-44d7-86bd-053f397c5c01\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#7333361f-9cbc-44d7-86bd-053f397c5c01\" id=\"7333361f-9cbc-44d7-86bd-053f397c5c01-link\">3<\/a><\/sup> and a weight-retaining effect has been shown in cancer and cachexia patients<sup data-fn=\"df6880be-3976-4393-8d61-687e8cbf92f1\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#df6880be-3976-4393-8d61-687e8cbf92f1\" id=\"df6880be-3976-4393-8d61-687e8cbf92f1-link\">4<\/a><\/sup>. This leads to beneficial effects on the weight loss and muscle deterioration associated with cachexia. In cancer-patients, the marine fatty acids have shown anti-tumour properties and beneficial effects on treatment outcome<sup data-fn=\"5244d76e-a6f3-4031-bff3-173b74498c31\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#5244d76e-a6f3-4031-bff3-173b74498c31\" id=\"5244d76e-a6f3-4031-bff3-173b74498c31-link\">5<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitamin D deficiency is especially common in medical inpatients<sup data-fn=\"5ecd59c9-2acf-4768-ae9a-748cb8933d68\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#5ecd59c9-2acf-4768-ae9a-748cb8933d68\" id=\"5ecd59c9-2acf-4768-ae9a-748cb8933d68-link\">6<\/a><\/sup> and people with anorexia<sup data-fn=\"2549af97-4758-476f-9dbd-aeec2c6c8912\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#2549af97-4758-476f-9dbd-aeec2c6c8912\" id=\"2549af97-4758-476f-9dbd-aeec2c6c8912-link\">7<\/a><\/sup>. Vitamin D is especially important for these patients as it influences the immune-function [16] and plays an important role in muscle function<sup data-fn=\"5e84d112-04fd-4123-90e2-6236a051411b\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#5e84d112-04fd-4123-90e2-6236a051411b\" id=\"5e84d112-04fd-4123-90e2-6236a051411b-link\">8<\/a><\/sup>. In addition, low levels of vitamin D are associated with insulin resistance<sup data-fn=\"95adb3bd-90e6-4263-a38e-e23d73b56de6\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#95adb3bd-90e6-4263-a38e-e23d73b56de6\" id=\"95adb3bd-90e6-4263-a38e-e23d73b56de6-link\">9<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protein is essential in promoting muscle growth and preventing muscle-loss<sup data-fn=\"51b4e267-da8f-481c-9419-863d2a708dc6\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#51b4e267-da8f-481c-9419-863d2a708dc6\" id=\"51b4e267-da8f-481c-9419-863d2a708dc6-link\">10<\/a><\/sup>. Remune contains high-quality whey protein, which is a complete protein as it contains all essential amino acids. Whey protein is easily digestible and therefore leads to less satiety than other protein sources. Whey protein is known for its high content of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA\u2019s), which are especially important in stimulating muscle growth<sup data-fn=\"04319ccc-9ac7-4057-9896-e430d4bd686d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#04319ccc-9ac7-4057-9896-e430d4bd686d\" id=\"04319ccc-9ac7-4057-9896-e430d4bd686d-link\">11<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, Remune consists of polyphenol-rich juice from fruits and berries, which also contributes with fibre and phytochemicals.
